It is perhaps a testament of our time, or a testament to the nation’s appetite (or lack thereof) for a reality cooking show than the reality of taking part in Australia’s social, economic and political future.
As mentioned before, the Leaders’ Debate was moved so that it did not clash with the finale of MasterChef. Has this ever happened before? An event of national significance and importance was moved so that a commercial TV show can attract the maximum audience. Only in Australia I guess. Is this election so insignificant that its only debate can be moved to accommodate a reality TV show?
Now having just watched the so called debate (more a moderated statement of the candidates bland views), I think they should have just let it clash with MasterChef. The debate was uninspiring, passionless, devoid of substantial polices and neither side had any grand vision for the nation’s future. It was a complete bore! The only winners were the ones who did not tune it to watch it! There was more insightful comments on Twitter (#debate) than in the debate itself!
Rather than appealing to our lowest denominator, should not politicians inspire us, lead and appeal to our greatness, and lay a vision on how together we can advance Australia? Advance Australia. Now that sounds a lot better than Moving Forward!
