From late last month, London got its own Cycle Hire Scheme. I wrote about my experiences using the one in Paris previously. Since then I have also used a similar scheme in Stockholm, Trondheim, and seen it in use in Washington DC. I love cycling and the verb is synonyms with The Netherlands.

My previous posts (and here) recount my observations about cycling in The Netherlands. Also, I just found out that 1.3 million cycles were sold during 2009. Which brings the number of bikes in the low lands to over 18 million, more than enough for one per head. I am sure an unknown number are in the various canals!

The London scheme is not without its critics. (Some say it is a big United Nations conspiracy.) But the most important one is about safety and the wearing of helmets.

I have never cycled in London as I do not trust the drivers and do not have a helmet. I have cycled helmet-free all over The Netherlands and the capitals of the Nordic region and most of Germany. But when it comes to London and other places, where the sight of lycra-clad cyclists outnumber the civilian dressed ones, it means a helmet is in order.

This is an important factor to consider if anyone is keen on introducing a similar a hire scheme in Australia. Our compulsory helmet laws. Which I agree with in Australia (given that our drivers need more education on how to drive!). Helmets are redundant in The Netherlands. The drivers are usually cyclists themselves and what cows are to India, cyclists are to The Netherlands. Knock on over and feel the full weight of the law.

I look forward to trying London’s new cycles. While I wear my helmet.
