“The military history book The Guns of August opens with the death of King Edward VII, whose funeral 100 years ago brought together nine kings and other representatives of 70 nations “in the greatest assemblage of royalty and rank ever gathered in one place, of its kind, the last”. Four years later, some of those very kings were at war with one another, some would lose their thrones, some would lose their empires and all would bear witness to the sacrifices of their subjects.”
