Just saw the tail end of the BBC’s Newsnight programme on the English Defence League. I have never heard of this group until tonight. The BBC has its own analysis and the Newsnight programme featured a Dr Matthew Goodwin who seems to know something about this group.

I don’t know whether you can simply label the EDL as a ‘far-right’ group. They are something else. They seem to be all encompassing and on the programme it seemed to have members of different backgrounds. It will be no surprise if their movement has a mass following as they espouse views which will resonate among a majority of middle ground people who are fearful of militant Islam.

I am keen to know more about this group, what they actually do, who their supporters and financial backers are. If anyone has any reports or analysis let me know.

Their website says “peacefully protesting against militant Islam”. Just hope they place more stress on the word ‘peacefully’ in their actions.
