Much has been written about Australia’s new prime minister, Julia Gillard, and the manner in which she came to Office. And that manner is constitutionally valid. Though many would have preferred to have elected our first female prime minister, but we do not elect our prime ministers. They just wanted some kind of say.

Of all the reports I came across the past few days, thisĀ BBC interview with Katky Lette, the British commentator (who was born in Australia), was disturbing. I use those words to describe Kathy as I do not consider her fit to comment on Australia or Australians (or anything else for that matter!).

Why does the British media continue to drag out the ‘token Australians’ living in London, to comment on Australia. These so-called Australians no longer share any affinity with Australia, and it is they who label themselves cultural or intellectual refugees from Australia. The usual suspects include Lette, Greer, Harris. These people left a good five decades ago or so and have not lived in Australia for any significant period since then.

The British media (and the Australian ones) should seek out a new generation of Australians, with some connection and perhaps some committed to Australia, to speak on Australia. It is about time we stopped perpetuating the old, stale stereotypes about Australia. Something Lette does, ad nauseam.
